Teachers and schools in Siena 1357 – 1500

25.00

Education, especially grammar teaching, has been recognised as a critical dimension of the spread of humanism in fourteenth and fifteenth-century Italy. Research in this area has burgeoned; yet barely any work has been done on pre-university teaching in late medieval and Renaissance Siena, despite the otherwise rich picture we have of Sienese cultural life in that period.

Descrizione

This book presents the record of communal appointments of grammar and arithmetic teachers in Siena from 1357 to 1500, with biographical profiles of these and other teachers.

The introduction outlines the opportunities and problems that confronted the city administration as it assumed responsability for pre-university as well as university education, and set about hiring teachers of repute and keeping up with developments in the disciplines.
